Yves Samain provides answers to RRP.RO questions

1. What do you think about the increasing usage of medication (drugs and medicine)? Shouldn't we use more natural products?

For me, the method used by some fanciers to play the pigeons – yearlings and females – is dangerous for the future of our sport because the results are not a true reflection of the pigeon’s class. And those who buy their brothers, sisters or descendants of this family
soon find out they have been cheated. Before it was special to compete with a female yearling or just flying a widower, now is just the opposite. The proof that pigeon doesn’t worth two cents is that his owner is willing to sell it directly after the racing season. It's like in human sports: after a great feat, we learn that there was doping, then the dream is gone. I am not impressed by the fantastic results achieved by some fanciers with their young generations and especially for me this is not a selection criterion to improve.

2. How far do you go with the widowhood during the racing season? I mean, after how many races do you switch to the natural system?

90% of cases and I also play the whole season with the widowers. Although I am a professional gamer with the females (I also won the 2nd National), the widower is more efficient. Often a female happens to win big internationally races, but if we analyse the resulting output we can see that females are not too often among the first 100 winning birds within a national competition. When a female is in peak condition, it lasts longer than males. The difficulty with the game in Belgium is the number of competitions and some fanciers now specialize on one or two competitions. And that also changes the value of the results. Compared with cycling, a runner has to attend all the classics and then he goes for the Tour of France. Nowadays, certain fanciers prepare only for the Tour of France. There’s one thing I’m certain about: the females (not yearlings or squbs) flying at the top over long distances transmit their qualities to their descendants. For me a good pigeon is one that repeats the good results, not the one who wins just once.

3. How do you stimulate your widowhood birds? Is there a certain technique or everything depends on each bird?

3. The motivation is as high as it is unknown to the pigeon. Each year we start with the same care, same dates of couplings, the same vitamins and drugs, but we don’t come to the same results. The form comes when the following principles of good care are observed:
1) pigeons in perfect health;

2) flying regularly and appropriate food;

3) exposure of the pigeon to the sun light (sun entry).

This brings us good condition, then hopefully great shape. There are certain tricks to motivate the pigeon, such as the reverse Nichette doors, put another male in the Nichette, put a mirror in the Nichette, put a little young widower etc. But the true motivation often comes either naturally, either by chance. One can replicate a detail but this will not have the same impact.
