Gerald Mack provides answers to RRP.RO questions

1. What do you think about the increasing usage of medication (drugs and medicine)? Shouldn't we use more natural products?

We think it’s essential to have an excellent and permanent medical supply nowadays. You cannot compete at the very top using only natural products. We tried one year just with natural things and it was OK for the first quarter of the season, but the condition dropped dramatically afterwards. During the racing season we are permanently working with medicine against coryza, tricho, hexamites and ornithose. One week trico, next week ornithose/coryza, next week hexamites/coli, always with products from Belgica De Weerd or Herbots.

2. How far do you go with the widowhood during the racing season. I mean, after how many races do you switch to the natural system?

Our team is played by the widowhood system throughout the whole racing season, from the first to the very last flight. At the beginning we train our cocks even between the competitions. For instance, on Tuesday and Thursday we basket them for private traning tosses up to approx. 75 km and let them fly under competition circumstances. That means they have their hen etc. when returning home. After 4-5 weekends we stop doing this and do not train them between the weekends anymore.

3. How do you stimulate your widowhood birds? Is there a certain technique or everything depends on each bird?

This is very different from cock to cock, but you have to know your birds very well. For instance, our present Superstar, „Pokerface” 81st Prov. Acecock 2009, 29th National Acebirds 2009 etc.) will alwyas have an additional cell close to his main one. This cell is opened only before basketing, when the hen is coming to him, then they will use 2 cells. He won 36 prizes in 3 years, so every year 12 prizes in a row. He just missed 1st place and this happened when he couldn´t see his hen before basketing, because she didn´t dropped in the loft. We always show the hens to the widowers before basketing at least 1 hour. We think that you have to promise something to the birds before they go to competition.
