BUTUCANU STEFAN - GALATI

I am 47 years old, I`m married and I have a 21 years old daughter. The passion for pigeons runs in the family, my father as well as my two grandfathers had a passion for pigeons. I started practicing the columbophile sport at Barlad and I continued to practice it at Galati where I settled.
            I started out with pigeons from the Arthur Bricoux and I. Mohr lines, pigeons that dominated the lofts in the `60s – `70s and they were beautiful too. These pigeons (I had) were very ambitious, but they couldn`t compete week by week (now I realize it`s because of the diseases).

An event that had an impact on me and showed me the will of these pigeons was the following:
When I was a child I gave a friend, who was living in Barlad, several youngsters so that he could teach them there. Of these, a very beautiful female (a blue one with a headlock) didn`t want to learn and returned home. It was enough for her to return home once for every time she got out she came back to me. Then, my friend resorted to a condemnable gesture, namely he cut her pinion with a hatchet. With 2 feathers out of 10, she flew from one house to another, from one fence to another and she traveled 2-3 km home. I kept an eye on her escape and I was impressed. Regarding this, I would like to say that this type of pigeon didn`t handle the competitions organized over Carpathians and the fond stages, hence a valuable pigeon must have several qualities to be a good fonder.
            By a rigorous selection during flights, I got on to have pigeons who did well in stages of over 700 km, but it wasn`t enough, I had to look for valuable pigeons and combine them with my own so that these cross-breedings result in complete pigeons (speed in distance regime).
            My current loft is composed of:
-         2 flight compartments (where there are 15 couples) upstairs;
-         2 flight compartments (where there are 18 couples) upstairs;
-         2 youngster compartments (where there is room for 60 youngsters) upstairs;
-         3 compartments, each for a pair of reproducers, upstairs.
I reproduce annually an approximate number of 50 youngsters for me, but until spring it remains usually a number of 25-30 youngsters and in winter I have approximately 100 pigeons in the loft.
            The basis of my pigeons is represented by the pigeons purchased from Galati from the most valuable columbophiles of the respective times after I had introduced sons, nephews of the pigeons who were champions at the `Record` category, of pigeons who participated in Olympics or directly these. I obtained almost everything I wanted in terms of acquisitions. I am not interested in purchasing a line of pigeons, but pigeons with very high performances, because pigeons of low quality come from the average ones, but also from these…

A part of the great values which stay at the basis of the current pigeons:
           - the majority of the values from prof. Savu Paul`s loft, from Iaşi, amongst which the male with the series 135407-70 `Tokio`- he flew 6 years in a row in competitions over the Carpathians and participated in the Olympic from Tokio;
- 232-83 M – Katowice Olympic (4 fond flying years) – Mihail Cup– Iasi;
            - 1089-84 M- 2nd place `Record` category (3 fond flying years) – Mihail Cup – Iasi;
            - 58757-91 M - Utrecht Olympic – Sava Dorel – Iasi;
            - 130857-85 M – Verona Olympic – Dejica Nicolae – Timisoara;
- 28920-99 M – Las Palmas Olympic (5 years) – Andruseac Vasile – Timisoara;
            - 207041-86 M – national champion record (3 years) – Andruseac Vasile - Timisoara;
            - 090715-93 M – Bassel Olympic – Cralea Virgil – Tulcea;
            - 78532-89 H – Expo `92 – Cralea Virgil – Tulcea;
            - 23119-84 M – national champion in 1989 – Stanuca Vasile – Tulcea;
            - 520-86 H – Expo `89 – Stanuca Vasile –Tulcea.

My pigeons are played naturally, mated in March-April, than I obtain one or two series of youngsters and after that they are treaded on eggs or on up to 10 days old youngsters. My pigeons do not fly around the loft and for this (in the last years) I make one or two trainings before the fond stages. I offer them nourishment at bag and certain foreign products for treatments or additional alimentation as much as I can afford.
            Youngsters are trained (especially with one or two colleagues) on short distances, and if the weather is good they come to a distance of 200-300 km, without taking an interest when they come back (after a day, a week or a month). The only thing I`m interested in when it comes to youngsters is their health. The flight route in the last years was Poland, hence the pigeons were trained on the north Moldavia route.
            My pigeons are motivated the following way:
-                      I raise one, two series of youngsters in the spring, I try to please them (like uncoupling them or flying them by force) to make them eat food and drink water with pleasure. The pigeon must love its loft and have a home and a family, this is the true motivation, as for the rest, any trick brings about a spark for a short period of time, and sparks give birth to other sparks. Try to give a colleague a great champion who participated in competitions only in his widowhood (without raising any youngsters) and this colleague should breed leaving him to raise youngsters and after that letting him free. You will see that that pigeon stays there where he raised youngsters. So what is the motivation?
-                      the matching system represents for me 80 % of the columbophile art and I practice it the following way: I do the couplings function of the value of the family which every individual pertains to. I compensate, namely I match the pigeon which pertains to a big resistance family with that who pertains to a high speed family (a family in distance regime). I take into account that the two are not too big, too heavy and with too lightish eyes (light eyes). I put the most valuable pigeons in sanguinity, and after that I practice cross-breeding for 2 maximum 3 generations and after that I do sanguinity again with the most representative pigeons and so on. Along the years I have obtained a series of results in competitions as well as in the national championship.

Special guest of an important columbophile exhibit organized in 2003

As dissatisfactions were more than the satisfactions it is hard for me to note them down.
            Regarding the future I have a few projects I would like to achieve, but it all depends on the time. One of the projects is the continuous and high level selection concerning the stages of over 1000 km. And the last project (it`s a child`s dream) will be `painting` the pigeons red. I would like to find a durable `paint` which will not wash off at `the first rain`, and time will tell if I have managed to do that or not.
            As far as the treatments are concerned, I can say the following things: I did several tests in the past (many of them being unsuccessful) as I didn`t have products for pigeons. Now, there are very good products from companies with tradition (from Germany, Holland, Belgium). I administer the treatments following a well established program (improved along the years) and I see to it that everything goes well, I do not administer these treatments just because for the sake of doing them. A great geneticist said that `it is one thing to look and another to see`. I believe that this makes the difference between a young columbophile (unexperienced) and an experienced columbophile who made efforts to note down all the aspects and details which appeared along the years.
            Future results regarding competitions as well as the recovery of the future generation of pigeons depend on the permanent state of health. Concerning the products for the recovery of pigeons after an effort, I use 80% of the apiarian products, especially the grained pollen which I administer directly into the nutrient.

Amongst some columbophile friends from Ardeal

Taking into account my columbophile experience, I recommend young columbophiles the following:
-                      to have a useful loft (dry, accordingly airy, well lit) in order to have healthy pigeons;
-                      cleaning in the loft must be made in relation to the used installations (if there are bolters, once a month);
-                      acquisitions must be made from the most homogeneous lofts (where they work in sanguinity, and valuable pigeons appear every year) or following experienced lofts from which they tale their genetic material;
-                      maintenance of the pigeons must be function of the categories they participate in, those from fond and marathon must be used to being hungry and thirsty, this way they will love their master more;
-                      marathon pigeons must not be disturbed from their activities and, moreover, they must not be overexited. Young columbophiles must know that they must cultivate the `lines` of big racers (pigeons) not the `lines` of big lofts;
-         the flight system must be adapted function of the time and the experience of the breeder;

Concerning selection, things are simpler: fly the one year old pigeons at stages of over 750 km, reproduce from those who are not affected by this effort and shortly you will be amongst the columbophile stars.

For me the reproduction chapter represented everything, so I recommend that, the fist time, the reproduction be made using the one year old pigeons who flew at fond, and after that the best exemplars should be chosen. Namely dominant pigeons, from the point of view of resistance to flights along the years as well as pigeons with a good psychic (as like he would come from the field not from 900 km) with a rapid power of recovery, without needing stimulants. If after a few years of flying the pigeon also has top stages then the chance of being a good reproductive is very high. Instead, you must be very careful with these pigeons which you involve in reproduction because they will not give values so easily (only after a few years), so keep some youngsters from them and reproduce from these and you will see that you will be satisfied.
            Nowadays, you do not hear very often the question `how did he get this value`, `from who is it reproduced`. Now, all columbophiles ask `how did you play this value, what did you give that pigeon` that he came so fast?
            Many people forget that a `helped` pigeon will never be able to give `helped` youngsters, but his real value !!!!
